I came over the rise, a truck flashing it's lights at me, and there he was
Pretty, blue-ticked, hound or dane-like, not a small dog, one dark ear,
muzzle covered in blood,
crumpled by the side of the road
There were already tears in my eyes, when he rolled his head over his shoulder and looked right at me,
more whites than anything else
There were already cars pulled over, and I had nothing to offer but being in the way
So I drove away
Saw a statey on the road headed toward the scene
The sight of him, laying there so pathetic, burned into my mind's eye
Not a good start to the day.

Date: 2007-07-18 06:50 pm (UTC)From:A couple of times I have come upon a dog hit and killed. I took whatever towel, rug that I had in the trunk and rolled the body unto it and put the poor dog on the side of the road. And then tried to contact owner. Was never able to. But at least the owner would not come home to a mangled body cause drivers just didn't see or didn't care.
Now with cell phone, I would probably call up the police and make sure the body was respectfully taken care of.
One more reason to keep the dog on a leash. The world is too fast for dogs happily scampering along, heedless to whatever dangers might be on the way
