As many of you know, I was pretty active with the anysoldier.com program a few years ago, and remain active, though less so, today.

I know some of you have family/friends in the service, and found this article to be quite interesting:
http://www.marines.mil/units/marforpac/imef/1stmlg/Pages/2006/Popular%20clothing%20off-limits%20to%20Marines%20in%20Iraq.aspx

Basically, it reiterate what we as blacksmiths/scadians have always known - Man-made fabrics like polyester are made of Pure Evil when dealing with flammable situations.

You know I hadn't thought of that in context of armed forces but it makes a lot of sense. Cotton however sucks to wear in hot weather. I've recently gotten into wool (not an option for some people I know) but the really fine merino wool fabrics out there often perform better than their man-made counterparts in my experience, they're naturally anti-bacterial (synthetics get this funk after a while which is nigh impossible to wash out), wick very well, and don't turn into molten liquid death when burned. So uh if you know people might be good to point them in that direction hopefully they can get it in appropriate colors.

Ibex (VT local), Icebreakers, Devold, Smartwool and a few other companies make some great light to super light-weight merino base layers.
