Aug. 24th, 2009 09:50 am79 AD - Mt. Vesuvius erupted, destroying the southern Italy cities of Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. It was around noon when Vesuvius exploded, covering Pompeii in an almost 13 feet deep layer of ash. The fate of the other two cities was buried under mud and volcanic debris. Because the volcanic ash preserved the remains of the city so well, archaeologists have been able to determine what life was like in Roman times. Today Vesuvius is still active.
I got to go to Pompeii when I was younger. I think I'd appreciate it more now.
