I have this project that I'm working on that had the wicked potential to be Wicked Cool.
But, you know, in this day and age, I have no production budget. So it's less than cool, but still doesn't suck.
Then it's been run past a Committee, and since everyone in the Committee has their own taste and opinion, it gets pared down, and distilled, and now it has no soul.
It once was Wicked Cool - now it has no balls.
BUT
It's the first truly "from the ground up" original design I've done with the Four Letter Brand since I've started working here. Other original design was for internal use only, and while neat and all, it lacks... well, balls.
This - this has traction. This has Potential. This is a Nifty Thing that will be seen in distant lands that will likely get into my portfolio once it done (if all goes well) because in the end, It's Mine. My Baby. My design work. My ideas and thoughts and execution. With a lot of input, but this wasn't based on someone else's file.
Someone else's platform, sure, but I started this one by opening up InDesign and clicking "File > New > Document"
And that's why, boys and girls, I'm here at 6:30 on a Friday night. That's why I can't just leave my work at work sometimes.
It _IS_ an art, and every once in a Very Rare While, it licks up a tiny little flame of passion.
That hesitant moment when I've thrown myself off the cliff and onto the blank canvas of "Document".
"Design is in everything we make, but it's also between those things. It's a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda and philosophy."
