I should take more fridays off...
May. 4th, 2009 11:24 amI had a lovely, lovely weekend.
Kicked it off at the absurd time of 4:15 am on Friday to go with Dervish and The Other Jen to go dancing with the crazy people in Cambridge. It was freeing, beautiful and strangely indescribable.
We shared breakfast, and I drove The Other Jen home. Toodled back to my place, played with the pooch and baked. Read a book. Tidied the house, but really didn't do a heck of a lot, and it felt awesome.
Went up to Chez Illi-bomber that evening for beer and fire. Was joined by good friends, some of whom I hadn't seen in quite a while, and it was good to catch up. Got a pleasant visit from the Consort as an added bonus. I have determined there should be more beer and fire in the future.
Saturday, woke up, dealt with morning Dog things and took off for the New England Polled Herefords sale.
It was a good learning experience - didn't actually buy any cattle, but made a lot of friends and got a lot of contacts. While the prices were good (relatively speaking, $2k for an animal is still quite a bit of $,) we weren't 100% sure of what we were looking for, and this helped solidify it a little better.
HorseChaser and Dad went home and finished putting up the fence we started last week, and she made a few calls. I'll likely be driving out to see some more cattle this weekend for mother's day. What fun, ehh? But it actually is, in a way I can't really describe.
At this point, I'm thinking we're looking at picking up 3 breeding heifer/cows and 4 feeder steers - Mom and Dad want half of one, neighbors down the road want 1/2, and friends in town want 1/2.
That leaves 2.5 walking steak generators to figure out how to sell off legally. Which means greater research into USDA approved processing facilities.
Don't get me started about the USDA these days - it's hard to shut me up.
I know there are interested parties out there (everyone should think about chest freezers for Christmas!) but it's a matter of us figuring out how to best deal with humane end of life issues for the animals, and still be able to sell of the product with the USDA's consent.
Yay, red tape.
Saturday night, went home and didn't do much. Read some more, played with Mr Dog.
Sunday I took myself out to brunch, toodled over to Chez Illi-bomber to hang out with Lionstar and Illustrator and do a Lowe's/Christmas Tree Shop run.
Lion took off, leaving me and Illustrator to put the wheelbarrow together.
How many educated, spatially aware individuals does it take to put together a wheelbarrow?
Let me just say, it wasn't as easy as the instructions made it look.
Hung out, chatted, watched a little X-Men 2, and went home for laundry and early to bed.
This week:
catch up on those dinner offers I've made to people,
attempt to be uber productive at work
bathe dog
Yea. That should do it.
