As far as I knew, (and that was little, because I am female, and so had no reason to pay attention to such things,) when a young man reached the age of 18, they had to hie themselves down to their local post office and sign up for the draft..
err... "Selective Service," if you want to put a pretty marketing spin on things.

Well, we knew that that was bound to happen to LittleBrother, as this month is his 18th. Death, taxes, and selective service,- all are bound to happen.

A letter arrived in the mail with his card. But he doesn't have to do anything. Dosn't actually have to sign up anywhere. He's pre-approved, as it were.
Make sure this information is correct, sign on the dotted line, congrats, we know where you are!

It struck me as off.. something you used to be compelled to go do, be an active participant in, now is automated. You don't even have the *illusion* of a choice anymore. (To choose to sign up, or choose to not, and risk punishment.) It just is, it has been decided, keep it safe, and when we need bodies to throw in front of the fanatics, we'll let you know.
